Ok let me try it while I got her. Ok! Adult dogs can bite. Dogs bite. They're animals. I have a lot of clients that will say my dogs will never bite. You don't know that for sure and if a dog was everto bite, it's so crucial that they understand what it takes to hurt humanskin. Dr Ian Dunbar world-renowned behaviorist and veterinarian has taught an exercise called bite inhibition. This is where we allow a puppy to mouth on ourhands. So we don't do the whole no bite stuff, it always makes it worse. Always makes it worse. So allow yourpuppy to mouth your hands, allow them to tell you what they've got to say. This ishow puppies talk when they're in their litter with their mother andlittermates. They mouth and they bite on each other. As a matter of fact, they probably spend 90% of their waking moments biting on each other. They feed, they eliminate, they bite, bite, bite, bite, bite. And then they feed and then bite some more. So now we've taken thispack animal away from its pack family we put it into what they consider to betheir new pack family. You know, to them we're just funny looking dogs, and theydon't know any other way in which to communicate so they nip and they mouthto say I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm thirsty, I'm bored. Right? So we're gonna give Shandlerhere, who needs a home by the way. My hand to bite and mouth and this is how I'mgoing to teach her what it takes to hurt human skin and I let her tell me whatshe's got to say. Now most of the time once you give, "Ha! You got a little yawn caught inthe middle there!" Once we give the puppy our our hand tomouth, once she applies too much pressure and I let her know normally what they'lldo is a sign of appeasement she'll turn around and lick my face as if to sayoops sorry I didn't mean to get ya, so let's see what she's got to say. You wanna tellme some stuff Shandler? What's been going on in your little puppy world? "Ahhh!" Good girl! No hard feelings! No big deal! Good girl! Good. Good. So now she's gonna rememberfor next time what it takes to hurt human skin. Especially when she's an adult. So we're teaching this during the optimallearning time when she's only four months old. Once they do this exercise by the waythey always get really sleepy I think it's because they finally get to shakeit off thier chest. It's very stress relieving when theyfinally get to say what's on their mind without someone constantly telling themto stop it. So I'm gonna see if she's interested in engaging to communicatethis way once more but I don't think she'll even want me anywhere near hermouth. Ya know, a lot of times when people are steering their puppies away from biting, it makes itworse. So this is what we do to treat that problem. It's called biteinhibition. Don't forget that Shandler is looking forher forever home and don't forget to subscribe.
